With National Volunteer Week 2011 upon us, AJLI would like to take time to honor the more than 155,000 women volunteers across four countries who have worked tirelessly and often without fanfare over the past year to improve the lives of women, support families and build their communities. Quite simply, their day-to-day efforts are the lifeblood of our organization, extending our 110-year legacy of civic service. With more than 292 independent Leagues now operating in the U.S., Canada, the U.K. and Mexico, these individuals have played a vital role in redefining the role of women in society.
April 10 marks the start of National Volunteer week 2011 in the United States. Established in 1974, the annual event has grown over the decades, and now draws on the support and endorsement of prominent companies and charitable organizations across the nation, as well as U.S. presidents, governors, mayors and other elected officials. The week is focused on recognizing those who find imaginative ways to engage in their communities, while inspiring others to serve and drive social change.
