It is said that the name “Harvey” means “warrior.”
And a warrior Hurricane Harvey has proven to be. For those of us not in Houston or the other many communities in Southeastern Texas, we watch the news and see unimaginable devastation from the winds, tornadoes and rain. It’s hard to imagine what five inches of rain per hour looks like and what damage lies ahead as rain continues and flooding is imminent.
At AJLI, we reached out to our South Texas Junior Leagues last Thursday, and over the weekend. We will keep League leaders posted once we hear from the individual League Presidents. We know that across the Association, members stand ready to help. Those wishing to provide immediate assistance are encouraged to give to the American Red Cross. Longer term, we will share specific ways that Leagues can help the South Texas Leagues and their communities.
Harvey is a warrior, but we are fighting back. Read about what Leagues are doing locally to lead, convene and collaborate in this time of crisis.

Dear Texas sisters, we’re thinking of you and sending virtual hugs from London and wishing you a speedy recovery from the effects of Harvey. You can do this and we’re here to help whenever you need us!!
I am at my home in West Texas. My home in Houston is spared. I have opened my home to those who need to come. And standby for shelter relief in Austin. I know what it is to lose a home in Katrina. The most important matter is life there after the strength to go forward. The most moving and resilience builder is the unity of human kindness. On behalf of Texans and fellow Jr Leagueres here I thank all our chapters and my chapter in London for your unity, kindness and support. We can feel it and it makes us stronger.
As a sustainer in the Junior League of Fort Worth, I hope that in all the soul searching about how to help southeast Texans within the shelters, we don’t forget those who are placed in shelters far from disaster areas such as Fort Worth and Dallas. A call has gone out (as in the aftermath of Katrina) for those with experience with working in emergency shelters. Most Junior League members don’t have that experience.I have many college friends in that area that I can’t find. Another thought might be to involve sororities and fraternities to help also. Thanks for your prayers, donations, and concern.
The Junior League of Bergen County (NJ) offers our prayers and support to our Junior League members in the affected areas.
